Despite weather, Langley World Singing Day Event was a success

Peace Arch Chorus was excited to organize Langley’s first World Singing Day. We may be small, but we’re mighty when together in song, with people all over the world!

Every year since 2011, on the 3rd Saturday in October, people all over the world gather in groups of all sizes in schools, pubs, parks, plazas and homes to sing and celebrate our common humanity. People of all ages, backgrounds and singing abilities join in.

You don’t have to be a great singer to sing today or any day! Just by singing for fun, instead of perfection, you’ll find your spirits lifted!

This year’s World Singing Day (WSD) intends to shine a light on mental health. It’s an issue affecting nearly one billion people on the planet, according to the United Nations. People all over the world are experiencing such challenging times.

World Singing Day is an action, meant to bring the world together in harmony.  Harmony certainly is something the world needs more of right now. Music has the unique power to bring together people of all ages, languages and backgrounds. Music is universal in its appeal & its effect.

Song of the Year

Each year there is a special song selected for people all around the world to learn. The 2024 song is a mashup of “We Are the World” and “Imagine”. The World Singing Day organization asks us to sing the song together in our community group,  video ourselves and then send it off to them.  The organization puts together montage videos of singers from around the world.

All Together

This year, we had planned to sing on the Douglas Park Stage - but an atmospheric river sidelined our plans. We moved to a singer’s amenity space and carried on, even though the power was out as well. Quartets Taxi and Wild Applause started the performance, then Peace Arch Chorus sang a few songs. We finished with a wonderful ‘all together’ rendition of the World Singing Day song.

Journalist Dan Ferguson was present at this year’s event, and followed up with an article in the Langley Advance Times.

Peace Arch Chorus thanks the City of Langley for the use of Douglas Park Stage, which they provided free of charge for us! And Mary Wulfhorst for organizing our emergency detour.

It’s fun to sing together & to be part of a special event happening all around the world!  Music really makes the world a better place!
